As a carrier of the BRCA 1 genetic mutation I am no stranger to familial cancer and preventative measures. I underwent my own prophylactic mastectomy and reconstruction in 2020 and 2021 only to find that there was a gap in rehabilitative care available. I navigated my own physical and emotional journey to overcome this major surgery and now hope to provide support for others doing the same.
My Personal Journey
Post Mastectomy rehab
-
Getting started with a preventative rehab program before cancer treatment and/or surgery has been shown to improve outcomes and reduce side effects. This can include walking, exercises, flexibility, and lifestyle modifications.
-
Can promote post surgical drainage of the lymphatic system, reduce swelling, and decrease pain. Scar tissue massage is important for improved tissue extensibility and restored range of motion.
-
Individualized rehab exercises to promote range of motion, restore strength, improve posture, and facilitate return to function.
-
Desensitization of painful nerves improving sensation and sensory processing of affected areas.
-
If applicable, you may benefit from techniques like graston or taping for scar tissue, swelling, fascial restrictions, pain, and mobility.
